Amanda immigrates to Chicago from Mexico knowing no one. What she wants is a family. What she needs is to discover the meaning of love. She meets an older woman, Veronica, who lives with her son; both have isolated themselves from the world, suffering through their own traumas. Veronica takes her in. Although Amanda has many difficulties settling down, her eagerness and enthusiasm allows the family to rediscover life. Amanda in turn finds, in Veronica and her son, the family that she had been searching for and discovers the meaning of love.
As Amanda’s story unfolds, the film explores many issues: the immigrant experience from a woman’s point of view, HIV/AIDS, being gay in a Latino household, unemployment and faith. These issues are not unique yet impact us in different ways.
